research says that it is important to see queer characters in film reach a happy ending because it will obviously be depressing if you end up seeing gay lovers being by death, homophobia, or the dissolution of a relationship. we don’t want to watch tragedies and that is not to say that we shouldn’t recognize the struggles that LGBTQ people are going through all over the world, just that some happy endings can end up giving people more hope to fight.
so here are our handpicked movies that are happy, gay and should be in your must-watch list on this month.
handsome devil (2017)
an irish comedy-drama takes us through the beautiful friendship and relationship of Ned and Conor. Ned, who hates any kind of sport and Conor, who is the rugby captain. the bond that they forge is nuanced and will make you fall in love with the movie. if you are looking for uplifting, feel-good moments, then give this a try.
God’s Own Country (2017)
a British romance drama that shows an evolving relationship between a sheep farmer and a Romanian worker who arrives on the farm to help out on the farm. the budding romance is one to die for. if you are someone who loves the beauty of the countryside, then this one is a no-brainer!
The Handmaiden (2016)
the handmaiden does not require an introduction. it is one of the most well-received Korean movies globally, winning the 71st British Academy Film Award in the category of Best Film Not in the English Language. if you love thriller and true crime, then this erotic psychological thriller will take your breath away. we are not going to give away any spoilers so put a reminder for this one.
Booksmart (2019)
this 2019 coming-of-age comedy is a true masterpiece. following the lives of two girls who set out to have a fun fuelled night of partying before they graduate to high school. they worked hard enough for it. The movie brings out beautiful nuances of growing up as a queer teen and also just gives us a taste of a coming-of-age comedy from a female gaze.
The Book Of Queer (2022)
if you are in love with drag queens and the flamboyant culture and history, then do not miss the 2022 show, the book of queer, which gives a well-researched overview of famous queer people in history. if you are a history buff and in love with the queer culture, this show is for you!
