okay, we all know that we have thought about going sustainable at least once this year. woken up and said, “hey, today I will try to change. take care of our planet” but guess what? it’s not that easy.

but, before you give up on the idea and go back to sleep. here’s what you need to know. you can’t change your lifestyle in one day. but what you can do is take one step at a time. starting from the simple task of deciding what to wear.

this doesn’t mean that you throw out the clothes you have and start buying sustainable clothes. it’s just to know when to start and when to stop.

this all sounds too difficult but like everything else in life, it isn’t if you really want it. but still, here are some very simple steps that you can take to start your sustainable journey. trust me. it will be worth it.

know what you are buying

knowledge is power. not to sound too melodramatic here but researching about what you are buying and how they are being produced is the first step to make your wardrobe more sustainable. start researching brands that you love and figure out if they are really sustainable. and if you decide to shift after finding out they are not, then maybe your favourite brands could shift too.

what you need is right in front of you

confused? well, it’s possible that you already have a sustainable wardrobe. you just don’t realize it. all you need to do is organize your wardrobe and see if you have everything you have, like pants, tees, skirts, jackets, and so on. recycle the clothes you don’t want and see if you already have everything you already need to wear.

shifting from want to need

sometimes the things we want are hardly the things we need. so next time you go out shopping, figure out if you actually want that extra pair of pants or that unreasonably cheap tank top. if you don’t, then let it go. taking the high road will lead to a sustainable wardrobe.

will you really wear it?

yes. that is the real question. that top or skirt must be really cute. but will you really wear it? if your answer is something like, “well, I will wear it only once and never use it again.” then it’s the opposite of sustainable. buy after assessing wearability and your wardrobe is going to be much more sustainable than before.

versatility is a virtue

it is always better to buy clothes that you can pair with more than one cloth in your wardrobe. what’s better, with just one cute top, you can have multiple looks.

clothes need care too

you are on this incredible journey and you must be making many sacrifices on the way. but, if you don’t take good care of the clothes you buy, then you might be doing it all for nothing. always check the care instructions so that your clothes remain durable and sustainable.

so, there you go. these are some of the first steps you can take to build your sustainable wardrobe but these are surely not the only ones. keep updating yourself and even more than that believe that you can one day be completely sustainable.

till then, take care of yourself!

live sustainable! live aastey!
